Abstract
The pulp and paper industry requires sustainable alternative raw materials to reduce its dependence on wood, one of which is corn cob waste, which has a high lignocellulosic content. This study aimed to analyze the effects of soaking duration, cooking time, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration on the Kappa number in the pulp production process from corn cobs. The method employed was the soda pulping process conducted at a temperature of 130°C, with cooking times of 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, and 100 minutes; NaOH concentrations of 1.5 g, 3.0 g, and 3.5 g; and soaking durations of 1, 3, and 7 days. The Kappa number, which serves as an indicator of lignin content, was used as the primary parameter for analysis. The results showed that increasing both the cooking time and NaOH concentration led to a decrease in the Kappa number. A similar trend was observed with longer soaking durations. The lowest Kappa number, 4.55776, was obtained under the conditions of 7 days of soaking, 3.5 g NaOH concentration, and 100 minutes of cooking time. These conditions indicate that the delignification process occurred optimally, resulting in a lower lignin content in the produced pulp
