Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, in education provides opportunities to improve the quality of learning, particularly in enhancing students’ learning motivation and academic achievement through more interactive, collaborative, and technology-based learning experiences. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the use of Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) in improving students’ learning motivation and academic achievement. This research employed a mixed-methods approach. The research design consisted of Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in three cycles and an experimental study with a control class. The population of this study was all eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Al Kautsar PK Sukoharjo Regency, while the research subjects included Class VIII C as the CAR class, Class VIII D as the experimental class, and Class VIII B as the control class. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and tests (pre-test and post-test), while the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and t-test. The findings revealed that the improvement in students’ learning motivation and academic achievement occurred gradually through collaborative ChatGPT-based learning implemented in each cycle. In Cycle I, students used ChatGPT individually and presented their findings; however, the improvement in learning motivation and academic achievement was still relatively low. In Cycle II, learning activities were carried out through group discussions and presentations, resulting in a noticeable improvement in students’ motivation and achievement. Furthermore, in Cycle III, the learning process was developed through collaborative intergroup discussions involving presentations, responses, and additional input from other groups, which increased students’ active participation and led to more optimal improvement in learning motivation and academic achievement. Students’ learning motivation increased from 1.64 (low category) in Cycle I to 2.57 (good category) in Cycle II and 3.50 (very good category) in Cycle III. Students’ academic achievement also improved, from 64.84 to 75.16 in Cycle I, from 69.35 to 78.39 in Cycle II, and from 79.03 to 87.42 in Cycle III. In addition, the experimental class achieved higher learning outcomes than the control class, and the statistical test showed a significance value (Sig.) of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference before and after the use of ChatGPT. Therefore, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) through collaborative learning was proven to be effective in improving students’ learning motivation and academic achievement in Pendidikan Agama Islam subjects at SMP Muhammadiyah Al Kautsar PK Sukoharjo Regency
