Abstract
This research was motivated by teachers' concerns about the declining interest in memorizing the Quran among the younger generation. This distance from the Quran has led to juvenile delinquency, such as truancy, arriving late to class when the lesson has already started and the teacher is already in the classroom, frequently arriving late for unclear reasons, a lack of manners toward teachers, foul and rude language, dating, and lying. Recognizing that increasingly free associations, technological developments that tend to have negative impacts, environmental conditions that do not support Islamic religious education, and a greater emphasis on general knowledge over religious knowledge, these factors hinder the younger generation from understanding and memorizing the Quran. The location of this research was at MTs Pondok Pesantren Almatera Temanggung. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Quran memorization program in developing the character of students and the obstacles in implementing the Quran memorization program in developing the character of students. This research is a field study. The research method used in this study is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and document study. The data validity techniques employed by the researchers in this study included triangulation of techniques, sources, and time. Furthermore, the data analysis techniques employed were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the Quran memorization program in character building for students at MTs Pondok Pesantren Almatera Temanggung has three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The planning stage includes program objectives, program socialization, determining the supervising ustadzah (Islamic teacher), student selection, and determining the memorization class schedule. The implementation stage includes initial activities, core activities, and closing activities. The evaluation stage includes daily evaluations, mid-semester evaluations, semester evaluations, and evaluation of juz advancement. The students' character development includes discipline, politeness, honesty, hard work, perseverance, responsibility, respect for others, and religiousness. Obstacles encountered in the implementation of the Quran memorization program at Pondok Pesantren Almatera Temanggung stem from external and internal factors. External obstacles include inappropriate selection of tahfidz tutors, lack of innovative learning activities, ineffective daily evaluations, and limited semester evaluations. Internal obstacles include laziness, boredom, forgetfulness, chatting during tahfidz lessons, and drowsiness. Students also face suboptimal time management.
