Abstract

Fossil based diesel fuels cause environmental problems due to harmful emissions and limited energy reserves in the fuel sector are increasingly minimal, thus encouraging the development of biodiesel as an alternative renewable energy. This study aims to synthesize B35 biodiesel from flaxseed oil through a soxhletation extraction process using n-hexane as a solvent, followed by a synthesis method through a transesterification reaction with methanol and a KOH catalyst to form biodiesel oil products. The resulting pure biodiesel product is then mixed with diesel fuel through a hot mixing process at a composition of 35% biodiesel and 65% diesel, then tested for physicochemical properties and no testing was carried out on the fuel engine performance. The test results show that B35 biodiesel meets ASTM D6751 and SNI 7182 standards based on physicochemical characteristics. Compound analysis confirms the dominant content of methyl linoleate at around 65%, as well as the presence of ester functional groups (C-O) and C-H aliphatic unsaturated acids indicating the success of the transesterification process. This research demonstrates that hemp seed has the potential to be a viable alternative vegetable oil source for biodiesel blends, possessing a chemical structure that can compete with other vegetable oils.
