Abstract

This research examines the use of politeness strategies and expressive speech acts in the comment section of Chelsea FC’s Instagram post. Politeness, as an essential element of social interaction, refers to strategies used to maintain social harmony and reduce face-threatening acts. Based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, these strategies are divided into bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record politeness. Meanwhile, according to Searle’s (1979) speech act theory, expressive acts convey the speaker’s psychological state toward a particular situation, reflecting emotions or attitudes. The study identifies 36 expressive utterances categorized into 11 types: apologizing, thanking, condoling, congratulating, complaining, lamenting, protesting, deploring, boasting, complimenting, and greeting. Among these, complimenting appears most frequently, accounting for 55.55% of the data. In terms of politeness strategies, positive politeness dominates with 86.11%, followed by negative politeness at 13.89%, while bald on-record and off-record strategies were not found. The findings indicate that netizens predominantly use supportive and positive expressions, reflecting solidarity and reinforcing the sense of community within Chelsea FC’s online fanbase.
