Abstract
Elderly individuals experience declines in physical, psychological, and social functions that can affect their independence in daily activities. The independence of the elderly is influenced by several factors, one of which is family social support, as well as assistance programs that play a role in meeting needs and improving their welfare. This study aims to determine the differences in family social support and independence between elderly individuals who receive and do not receive assistance from Rumah Zakat in Cangkol Village, Sukoharjo Regency. This study used a quantitative observational method with a comparative analytic design and a cross sectional approach. The study population consisted of 140 elderly respondent. The study was divided into two groups: 70 respondents in the assistance recipient group and 70 respondents in the non-recipient group. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The instruments used included questionnaires on respondent characteristics, family social support, and independence in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that there were differences in family social support (p-value = 0.000) and differences in elderly independence (p-value = 0.013). The findings of this study indicate that elderly recipients of social assistance enjoy higher levels of family social support, whereas recipients exhibit a good level of independence.
