Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of social support provided by coaches to pencak silat athletes and analyze the role of such social support in fostering athletes’ grit. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with pencak silat athletes and analyzed through the stages of horizontalization, statement reduction and elimination, clustering into subthemes and core themes, and validation based on consistency with the participants lived experiences. The findings indicate that the four dimensions of coaches’ social support are interrelated in shaping athletes’ grit. Emotional support plays a crucial role in maintaining long-term interest and strengthening athletes’ hope, particularly when facing training pressures and failures in competition. Instrumental support facilitates training consistency through tangible assistance such as training program organization, provision of facilities, and physical accompaniment, enabling athletes to train in a disciplined and sustained manner. Informational support contributes to the development of purpose by providing guidance, strategies, and feedback that help athletes understand the meaning and direction of the training and competition process. Meanwhile, companionship support strengthens all components of grit by fostering close relationships, a sense of togetherness, and trust between coaches and athletes. Overall, coaches’ social support plays an important role in creating psychological stability, enhancing internal motivation, and reinforcing athletes’ perseverance and ability to recover from failure. Thus, coaches’ social support serves as a key factor in the development of high and sustainable grit among pencak silat athletes.
