Abstract

Background: World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 28–35% of older adults aged ≥65 years experience fall each year in the world, with the incidence increasing with advancing age. Falls are responsible for more than 95% of fractures in older adults and lead to a mortality rate of 17–25% within one year following hip fracture. Objective: Aimed to identify the presence of the effect of balance training interventions, with focus on Perturbation-Based Training (PBT). Methods: This study employed a critical review design. Results: From a total of 105 identified scientific articles, 8 articles fullfill the inclusion criteria and then used to the final analysis. Quality assessment showed that 6 articles were classified as Quartile 1 (Q1) journals and 2 articles as Quartile 2 (Q2) journals. Based on the PEDro scale, all 8 articles demonstrated low risk of bias (PEDro score >5). Conclusion: Based on the findings of the reviewed literature, it can be seen that balance exercises reducing fall of risk in the elderly and the implementation of Perturbation-Based Training (PBT) is effective in reducing fall risk.Treadmill based perturbation training with speed or surface variations is the most widely appliacble from of PBT in clinical settings.
