Abstract

The rapid expansion of the construction industries has created a growing demand for concrete production. Although Portland cement serves as the primary binder in concrete, its manufacturing process generates significant greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, a substitute material is needed to suppress the rapid production of cement. In this study, eggshell powder (ESP) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) used to partially substitute cement because Eggshell powder consist mostly of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), while sugarcane bagasse ash consist mostly of silica (SiO₂), which has pozzolanic properties. This experiment used the design of experiments (DOE) process with the substitution of 5% and 10% of the cement content with ESP and SCBA. The research is intended to determine the impact of eggshell powder (ES) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) to changes in slump test, compressive and tensile strength tests performed on 28 day old concrete. Based on this study, concrete containing 5% ES and 5% SCBA demonstrated optimal performance in increasing the mechanical properties of concrete, namely a tensile strength increase 8.83% and a compressive strength increase 4.16% compared to normal concrete. This shows that using sugarcane bagasse ash and eggshell powder as a partial substitute for cement can serve as a more environmentally friendly alternative.
