Abstract

Language is a crucial role in influencing interaction, serving not only to convey content but also to articulate conflict, power, emotion. This study explores how these dynamics manifest in the film The Suicide Squad (2021) by outline the kind of impoliteness and responses used between characters. Using qualitative descriptive method, data was drawn from film dialogue transcripts, and analyzed based on Culpeper’s impoliteness and Bousfield’s responses framework. The data show that all five types of impoliteness strategies is present in the film, with positive impoliteness being the most prevalent, followed bald on record and negative impoliteness, while sarcasm and withholding politeness occur less frequently. In terms of responses, defensive counter measure is the most common, suggesting that characters generally attempt to secure themselves without triggering bigger conflict. However, accepting impoliteness and offensive counter also exist depend on the power dynamic. This study demonstrate impoliteness in film is not unexpected but rather serves as a strategy to dominant position, establish character identity, and drive the plot, particularly in stressful and conflict environment.
