Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common type of motor disability found in children and is usually accompanied by cognitive, communication and behavioural problems, requiring a comprehensive rehabilitation approach. Although many physical interventions have been attempted, the sensory and emotional needs of children with CP in a therapeutic environment are still largely unmet. One innovation that has emerged is Snoezelen or Multi-sensory Environment (MSE), a non-directive method that offers regular sensory stimulation to support well-being and relaxation. Purpose: To determine the effect of Snoezelen therapy (Multi-Sensory Environment) on reducing spasticity in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Methods: This study was designed in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. A systematic search was conducted on databases such as PubMed and ScienceDirect in September-October 2025. The inclusion criteria included articles discussing Snoezelen rooms and including the results and benefits of Snoezelen rooms for children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Results: Findings indicate that the use of Snoezelen therapy has a positive effect on improving physical and neuromuscular abilities in children with CP, particularly in reducing muscle stiffness and improving gross motor skills. The best clinical results are achieved with a therapy duration of 30 to 45 minutes on a regular basis over a medium period, namely between 12 weeks and 6 months. This intervention not only functions as a ‘pre- physical therapy’ but also serves as an effective tool for regulating emotions in reducing aggressive behaviour and self-harm. An environment rich in various regular sensory stimuli supports the sensory integration process, which is essential for the learning abilities and social interactions of children with special needs. Conclusion: This study shows that Snoezelen has a significant effect in reducing maladaptive behaviour and improving neuromuscular function through a non-stressful multisensory environment. To achieve the best results, the intervention should be carried out regularly for 12 weeks as a preparatory stage before other functional therapies. The incorporation of Snoezelen into a multidisciplinary team is highly recommended as a way to help stabilise self- regulation and support the optimal development of children with CP.
