Abstract

Background: The development of speaking skills in early childhood is influenced by verbal stimulation and direct social interaction. However, increased exposure to digital media has resulted in longer screen time among toddlers, which may limit opportunities for direct communication. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between screen time and speaking skills, particularly in children aged 18–30 months. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between screen time duration and speaking skills in children aged 18–30 months. Methods: A quantitative correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 42 toddlers aged 18–30 months. Screen time duration was assessed based on World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, while speaking skills were measured using the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventory (MB-CDI) Short. Data were analyzed descriptively, and Spearman correlation analysis was used. Results: The analysis showed no significant relationship between screen time duration and speaking skills among toddlers (r = 0.048; p = 0.765). Most participants were classified as having low or recommended screen time (<60 minutes/day), with a mean screen time duration of 46.43 ± 37.40 minutes per day and a mean speaking skills score of 63.10 ± 17.38. Conclusion: Screen time duration was not significantly associated with speaking skills in children aged 18–30 months, indicating that other factors, such as parent–child interaction and verbal stimulation, may have a greater influence on early language development.
