Abstract
The film How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, released in 2024, received a positive response from Indonesian audiences. One of the social issues explored in the film is gender inequality, particularly the inequality experienced by women. The female characters Amah, Sew, and Mui portray how women experience gender inequality from youth to old age as a result of patriarchal culture in Asian societies, particularly in Thailand. This study employs Roland barthes’s Semiotic theory to analyze denotative, connotative, and mythical meaning in scenes that depict gender inequality. The research adopts a qualitative approach using semiotic analysis. The findings indicate that How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies represents gender inequality through scenes that reflect the unequal positions of men and women due to social consructions, the restriction of women”s freedom to achieve self-actualization, and the potential for resistance through acts of opposition and negotiation against gender inequality. Furthermore, the results show that the forms of gender inequality portrayed in the film include the unjust gender-based division of labor within the family, familial expectations imposed on women, gender-based inequality in rights, the unequal burden of caregiving responbilities, restriction on women’s personal freedom due to social norms, obstacles to women’s educational self-actialization caused by family crises, inequality in inheritence distribution between daughters and sons, male control and domination over women’s lives, and practice of arranged marriage imposed on daughters as an implication of patriarchal culture.
