Abstract

Adolescence is a time when individuals experience both emotional and social development. During adolescence, individuals undergo social development, expanding their relationships and social interactions by opening up (self-disclosure) to others, both directly and indirectly (through social media). However, there is a suspected tendency for suboptimal self-disclosure in late adolescence, amidst high social media activity and extensive social networks. This study aims to determine the effect of social media usage intensity and peer social support on self-disclosure in late adolescence. This study used a quantitative method with a correlational approach. The subjects were late adolescence aged 18–21 who actively used social media, using an accidental sampling technique. The instruments used were a scale of social media usage intensity, a scale of peer social support, and a self-disclosure scale, all of which were tested for validity and reliability. The results showed a significant simultaneous effect between social media usage intensity and peer social support on self-disclosure (ρ² = 0.579, p < 0.05). Partially, both variables also significantly influenced self-disclosure. This finding indicates that adolescents' self-disclosure is influenced by the intensity of social media use and the quality of peer support.
