Abstract
Characterized by hyperglycemia, diabetes mellitus represents a persistent medical condition frequently observed among the geriatric population. Apart from physiological drivers, stress-related psychological factors function as key determinants in blood glucose stability. Stress can trigger an increase in stress hormones, which contributes to an imbalance in glucose metabolism. The aim of this research was to analyze the correlation between stress levels and glycemic clinical status in geriatric individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted using a quantitative method, employing a correlational design to analyze the interrelationships between the studied factors. Purposive sampling was utilized to select 82 elderly diabetic patients as the study sample, while the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) served as the primary instrument for quantifying stress levels, while blood glucose levels were measured through fasting blood glucose examination. Bivariate data analysis was performed using the Contingency Coefficient test. The results showed that 49 elderly participants experienced moderate stress (59.8%) and 42 participants had high blood glucose levels (51.2%). The p-value was 0.001 (p<0.05) with a contingency coefficient (r) of 0.528, indicating a significant relationship between stress levels and glycemic clinical status with a moderate correlation. The conclusion of this study is that there is a meaningful relationship between stress levels and clinical glycemic status in elderly people with diabetes mellitus, so stress management needs to be a concern in glycemic control efforts in the elderly.
