Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of pain and disability in adults and the elderly, affecting their physical function and quality of life. To reduce pain and improve function in patients with knee osteoarthritis, physiotherapy interventions, particularly exercise and manual therapy, are widely used. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of combining manual physical therapy and physical exercise in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This study will be conducted through a systematic review. Methods: A literature search was conducted using the keywords “manual therapy,” “exercise,” and “knee osteoarthritis” in three databases, PEDro, Google Scholar, and PubMed. From the initial search results in PEDro (15 articles), Google Scholar (7,190 articles), and PubMed (136 articles), 10 journals met the inclusion criteria based on publication year, deduplication, and suitability with the PICO framework. The data extracted included research characteristics. Results: The studies showed that, compared to manual therapy or physical exercise alone, the combination of manual therapy and physical exercise resulted in a more significant reduction in pain, improvement in physical function, and ability to perform daily activities. Manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilization, manipulation, and soft tissue techniques have been shown to be more effective in physical exercise, especially in the short to medium term.
