Abstract

This study analyzes the practice of using social media sources in disaster reporting, focusing on the "Turkey Earthquake" (2023) and the "Gangneung Fire" (2023). Using a theoretical approach that includes the development of internet technology, social media agenda-setting, and the analysis of previous discussions, this study emphasizes the importance of transparency and reliability of social media sources in influencing disaster situations and rescue activities. In the 80 articles analyzed, social media sources from ordinary individuals were more frequently used (67.5%) than those from public figures (27.5%), and many articles (57.5%) showed a lack of transparency. The results of the study indicate that social media sources play a crucial role in disaster news coverage but often face issues of accuracy and reliability. Further analysis highlights that while the speed of information delivery is important in disaster reporting, efforts to ensure diversity and verification of sources must be emphasized. The study also reveals a tendency for media to use social media sources non-transparently, neglecting basic journalistic principles. The study concludes that to create more trustworthy and high-quality disaster reporting, media must enhance transparency and accountability in the use of social media sources. Additionally, further research on the practice of using social media by the media is expected to raise awareness and produce ideal usage examples in the future.
