Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition requiring lifelong insulin therapy and continuous disease management, which may lead to significant psychological burden and diabetes distress. The demands of disease management and concerns about long-term complications place individuals with T1DM at risk of psychological difficulties that may affect daily functioning and disease control. This study aimed to explore the experiences of diabetes distress among individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus in facing challenges and hopes in their daily lives. This study employed a qualitative design with a narrative inquiry approach. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with participants selected using purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis as proposed by Braun and Clarke, involving coding, categorization, and identification of themes. This study identified four main themes: emotional distress, coping strategies, adaptation to a new way of life, and self-transformation. Participants’ experiences of living with type 1 diabetes mellitus reflected a gradual and dynamic process of psychological adjustment. Emotional distress emerged as an initial response following diagnosis, followed by the development of coping strategies to manage psychological stress and the demands of disease management. These coping strategies facilitated adaptation to daily life changes and contributed to self-transformation, in which participants came to accept diabetes as part of their lives and developed hope for maintaining a productive life. The experiential process was non-linear and overlapping, and was shaped by individual life contexts, social support, and the ability to construct meaning from living with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The study demonstrates that the lived experience of individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus represents a dynamic process of psychological adjustment that evolves over time and is shaped by personal and social contexts. Family and social support emerge as pivotal factors in strengthening coping strategies and facilitating individuals' psychological adaptation to their chronic condition. These findings underscore the need of holistic, patient-centered nursing practice that addresses emotional well-being, coping mechanisms, and psychological adaptation, while also reinforcing family and social support in diabetes education and sustained care.
