Abstract

Student engagement is a primary key to educational quality, yet field observations indicate low participation levels among junior high school students. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and student engagement among students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Gatak Sukoharjo. This correlational quantitative study involved 70 students selected using cluster sampling techniques. Data were collected using a self-efficacy scale and a student engagement scale, then analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment correlation. The results revealed a correlation coefficient of r = 0.558 with a significance value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.01). These findings confirm a significant positive relationship with moderate strength. Self-efficacy contributes an effective weight of 31.1% toward student engagement, indicating that higher self-confidence in students leads to more active behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement at school. As a practical implication, educators are encouraged to strengthen students' self-efficacy through positive feedback and scaffolding methods to enhance active participation in the learning process
