Abstract
The designation of Banjarbaru City as the capital of South Kalimantan Province triggered rapid population growth and massive infrastructure development. This dynamic encourages the conversion of green land into waterproof built-up areas (concrete and asphalt) that increase heat absorption, thus strengthening the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. Population projections show a significant increase from 199,627 people in 2010 to 285,546 people in 2025. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon in Banjarbaru City in 2015, 2020, and 2025, and examine the effect of population growth and built-up land area on Land Surface Temperature (LST). This study uses a quantitative approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with multi-temporal Landsat satellite imagery extraction. The parameters measured include the Land Surface Temperature (LST) value for surface temperature, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for vegetation density, and the Normalized Difference Build Index (NDBI) to identify built-up land. The analysis of the relationship between variables was conducted using the Pearson correlation test and multiple linear regression. The results showed a drastic increase in surface temperature, from an average of 26.02°C in 2015 to above 32°C in 2025. There was a significant positive correlation between population, built-up land density, and LST intensity (R = 0.780). Important findings indicate that the main driver of temperature increase is no longer simply the horizontal physical expansion of cities, but rather the increase in building density and anthropogenic heat from dense population activities. The increase in population density from 8.74 people/Ha to 11.35 people/Ha causes heat to be trapped longer due to impermeable materials and the lack of cooling vegetation.
