Abstract

The former Giri Adipura Terminal in Wonogiri, which ceased operations in 2015, has experienced functional decline and transformed into an urban void, reducing the visual quality and socio-economic vitality of the surrounding area. Meanwhile, Wonogiri Regency holds significant potential in the tourism and creative economy sectors, as indicated by the increasing number of tourist visits and the growth of culture-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). However, this potential has not yet been supported by integrated and sustainable creative facilities. This research aims to design the revitalization of the former Giri Adipura Terminal as a Creative Tourism Center (CTC) through a Sustainable Architecture approach in order to optimize the area’s social, economic, cultural, and environmental functions. The methodology includes literature review, field study, and precedent study to formulate spatial programming, zoning concepts, and sustainable design strategies. The CTC concept integrates four main activities, performance, game, craft, and design which accommodating performing arts, interactive education, craft production, and design innovation based on local MSMEs. The Sustainable Architecture approach is implemented through passive climate-responsive design strategies for tropical conditions, optimization of natural lighting and ventilation, the use of local materials with low embodied energy, rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems, and the enhancement of green open spaces. The design outcome demonstrates that revitalizing the site has the potential to become a catalyst for creative economic growth, improve public space quality, and serve as a model for sustainable urban void redevelopment in Wonogiri Regency.
