Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the duration of Qur’an memorization on students’ emotional intelligence (EQ) and spiritual intelligence (SQ) within two Islamic educational settings: SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta and Darul Ihsan Muhammadiyah Islamic Boarding School, Sragen. The rapid expansion of digital technology has raised concerns regarding declining emotional regulation and spiritual awareness among adolescents, highlighting the need for integrative educational approaches that foster non-cognitive competencies. Employing a quantitative field research design, data were collected from 43 students participating in structured tahfidz programs using validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaires measuring memorization duration, emotional intelligence, and spiritual intelligence. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression after meeting classical assumption tests, including normality, linearity, and heteroskedasticity. The findings reveal that the duration of Qur’an memorization significantly influences both emotional and spiritual intelligence. At SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta, memorization duration demonstrated a very strong positive effect on spiritual intelligence (R² = 0.997) and emotional intelligence (R² = 0.996). Meanwhile, at Darul Ihsan Muhammadiyah Islamic Boarding School, memorization duration showed a significant effect on emotional intelligence (R² = 0.974), while its effect on spiritual intelligence was comparatively less dominant. These results indicate that structured and sustained engagement with Qur’anic memorization contributes meaningfully to students’ emotional regulation, self-awareness, and spiritual development. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the integration of tahfidz programs into formal and non-formal Islamic education as an effective strategy for strengthening emotional and spiritual intelligence. The findings contribute to the discourse on holistic Islamic education and offer practical implications for curriculum development, character education, and student well-being in the digital era.
