Abstract
Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease with high prevalence, especially in the elderly population. This condition is characterized by damage to articular cartilage, osteophyte formation, and an inflammatory process that causes pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion. Further impacts of OA are the occurrence of muscle tension and spasms around the knee joint, especially in the quadriceps muscle, thus inhibiting the patient's functional activities. Objective: To analyze the differences in the effect of friction massage intervention combined with stretching compared to isometric exercises in achieving relaxation in patients with knee OA. Methods: The study was conducted as a case report on eight patients with grade 2-3 knee OA. Interventions included friction massage, stretching, and isometric exercises. Muscle relaxation was assessed using a pain scale (VAS) and joint range of motion (ROM). Data analysis was performed descriptively and visually, using graphs to illustrate changes before and after the intervention in each subject. Results: Based on the analysis results, it was found that, after the intervention, there was a difference in joint range of motion, indicating increased muscle relaxation in the treatment group. Conclusion: Friction massage and stretching have an effect on increasing relaxation in patients with knee OA, especially in the quadriceps muscle.
