Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly prevalent among young adults, with a tenfold increase in Indonesia over five years (0.1% in 2013 to 1.0% in 2018). Physical activity is a crucial modifiable factor contributing 30-50% to T2DM prevention, yet specific data on young adult populations in rural Indonesian areas remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical activity and T2DM risk among young adults in Teloyo Village, Klaten Regency, stratified by gender and age groups. This analytical cross-sectional study involved 220 respondents aged 18-40 years selected using purposive sampling. Physical activity was measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and T2DM risk using the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation test with significance level p<0.05. Majority of respondents had active physical activity (39.5%) and low T2DM risk (80.5%). A significant negative relationship was found between physical activity and T2DM risk (ρ=-0.151; p=0.025). Average sedentary behavior reached 7.3 hours/day. Physical activity is significantly negatively associated with T2DM risk in young adults. High sedentary behavior is an important concern in T2DM prevention among young adult populations.
