Abstract

The decline in teacher character values indicates a new problem in the implementation of Strengthening Character Education (PPK), as mandated by Presidential Decree No. 87 of 2017. The current education system has not yet fully produced the ideal teacher capable of shaping a complete human being spiritually, morally, and socially. The classical thinking of Imam Al-Ghazali and Sheikh Az-Zarnuji serves as an important reference in developing the concept of a teacher with character. Education in Indonesia should not only emphasize cognitive aspects but also integrate affective and spiritual dimensions. This study aims to describe the concept of the ideal teacher according to Imam Al-Ghazali and Sheikh Az-Zarnuji, analyze their similarities and differences, and examine their relevance to PPK policy. The approach used is qualitative-interpretive (constructivism) through literature review with descriptive-comparative analysis. Classical Islamic educational theory and humanistic theory are used as the basis for the analysis because they emphasize self-actualization, personality, and the strengthening of moral and spiritual values. The research findings show that Al-Ghazali emphasized the importance of teachers' intellectual, pedagogical, social, and spiritual competencies, while Az-Zarnuji emphasized the values of politeness, submission, and respect in the processes of ta'lim, ta'dib, and tarbiyah. Both emphasize the development of teachers with holistic personalities that are relevant to the objectives of Strengthening Character Education (PPK), so that it is hoped that these values will be integrated into the national curriculum
