Abstract

Background: Complementary feeding (MP-ASI) refers to the provision of nutrient-dense foods and beverages to toddlers aged 6–24 months to fulfill nutritional requirements following the period of exclusive breastfeeding. Inappropriate complementary feeding practices remain a persistent public health concern, as they can adversely affect child development and elevate the risk of stunting. A primary contributing factor to this issue is the insufficiency of maternal knowledge. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of health education on maternal knowledge regarding complementary feeding for toddlers aged 6–24 months at the Gajahan Public Health Center, Pasar Kliwon District, Surakarta. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. A total of 100 respondents were selected using a accidental sampling technique. Research instruments consisted of knowledge questionnaires administered before and after a health education intervention utilizing leaflets. Results: The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in maternal knowledge levels prior to and following the intervention. Conclusion: Health education significantly influences the improvement of maternal knowledge concerning complementary feeding. Face-to-face counseling interventions supported by leaflet media were proven effective in enhancing maternal understanding of timely, age-appropriate, and nutritionally balanced complementary feeding practices.
