Abstract
This study investigates the difficulties faced by midwifery students in answering the TOEFL Reading section, the strategies they use to overcome these difficulties, and the contribution of the General English course to their TOEFL reading preparation. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving 20 midwifery students at a Health Institute in Batam, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a TOEFL Reading test, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of the General English syllabus, and analyzed using the qualitative model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that the most difficult TOEFL Reading question types were vocabulary in context, implied detail, and main idea questions, mainly due to limited academic vocabulary, weak inferential skills, and difficulty comprehending long texts. Although students applied strategies such as skimming, scanning, and answer elimination, these were not consistently effective. The General English course supported basic reading skills but provided limited preparation for TOEFL-oriented reading demands. Greater alignment between English instruction and TOEFL reading requirements is therefore recommended.
