Abstract

Sukoharjo Regency holds significant potential for developing the wood processing industry due to the availability of raw materials and a productive workforce. However, traditional manufacturing activities still contribute considerably to carbon emissions and industrial waste. This design research aims to develop a sustainable wood manufacturing facility that integrates the principles of environmental sustainability to minimize environmental impacts while enhancing regional economic productivity. The research employs literature studies, precedent analysis, field observation, and contextual analysis of the Sukoharjo region. The design concept emphasizes energy efficiency through cross ventilation, natural lighting, and the use of solar panels; biomass utilization from wood dust waste as an alternative energy source; and a circular economy-based waste management system to convert solid and liquid waste into value-added products. Building materials are selected from local sources with legal wood certification to support the principle of low-carbon materials. Spatially, the manufacturing complex is divided into three main zones: production, education and research, and supporting or industrial recreation areas. The design functions not only as an industrial center but also as an educational facility that demonstrates sustainable wood production processes to the public. The design outcome is expected to serve as a prototype of a green industry in Central Java, combining economic efficiency, ecological balance, and social empowerment harmoniously.
