Abstract
Pekalongan occupies a strategic position as a center for coastal batik, with a spatial character formed through the acculturation of various cultures. In an effort to support the batik industry, the International Batik Center (IBC) was built in 2012 in Wiradesa District, Pekalongan Regency, on the site of a former textile factory, designed as a center for batik trade, promotion, and education. However, spatially and visually, this area has not been able to display a strong identity. Furthermore, the construction of the Trans Java Toll Road has diverted vehicle circulation and the physical degradation of buildings, limited public facilities, and a weak architectural image have resulted in a decline in function, resulting in reduced visitor intensity. This study aims to design an IBC that emphasizes interactive spatial experiences, active participation, and personal involvement of visitors. This study uses qualitative methods with a creative tourism approach through spatial observation to identify masses, circulation patterns, and public facilities; literature studies related to creative tourism theory, public space design, batik philosophy, and the principles of sustainable cultural area design; and documentation in the form of visual data, existing photographs, and local demographic and economic information relevant to the architectural analysis. The results of this study produce a design concept that integrates trade, education, and recreation functions into a single batik-based area. The redesign strategy includes processing facade elements, designing public spaces, pedestrian paths, thematic plazas, and participatory creative spaces that are able to present authentic spatial experiences. The contribution of this research is to produce a contextual design model for a cultural area based on creative tourism, while strengthening Pekalongan's architectural identity as a Batik City and increasing the competitiveness of the local creative economy.
