Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mechanical behavior of keruing wood beams with bolt connections compared to solid wood beams. An experimental method was employed with solid beams measuring 200 × 10 × 6 cm and connected beams 60 × 10 × 3 cm, using brass bolts of 8 mm and 10 mm diameter, 140 mm length, installed vertically and horizontally. Tests were conducted at the Civil Engineering Laboratory, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, using a loading frame and Universal Testing Machine (UTM) to measure bending strength, deflection, compression, tension, shear, and modulus of elasticity according to SNI standards. Results show that the mechanical grading of wood is 5–8 times higher than visual grading. Theoretical maximum load (Pmax) of solid beams closely matches experimental results (108% difference), while Pmax of connected beams is similar to solid beams (101% difference), though stiffness is 2–3 times lower. Safety factors of 8 M and 10 M bolts are 6.39 and 6.79 (106% difference). These findings indicate that bolt connections cannot fully match solid beams’ strength but provide a viable structural alternative
