Abstract

This study aims to describe the impact of toxic relationships on the mental health of individuals in early adulthood. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed with three participants aged 21 who had experienced toxic relationships. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that toxic relationships affect four psychological domains: cognitive (cognitive distortions and negative self-evaluation), affective (fear, anxiety, and persistent negative emotions), social (withdrawal and interpersonal strain), and behavioral (avoidance and self-harming tendencies). Emotional attachment, hope for change, and social pressure contributed to the participants’ decision to remain in the relationship. Participants also adopted coping strategies such as seeking social support, self-reflection, and engaging in positive activities. In conclusion, toxic relationships exert multidimensional impacts on the mental health of individuals in early adulthood and may serve as meaningful experiences in shaping self-regulation and healthier interpersonal patterns..
