Abstract
Medical waste management is essential for the safety of patients, healthcare workers, and the environment. Nurses play a direct role in applying standard operating procedures (SOPs), while ward managers’ support is crucial to ensure effectiveness. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, ward managers’ roles, and the effectiveness of infectious waste management in the inpatient unit of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Karanganyar. A mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was applied. The quantitative phase assessed nurses’ knowledge and waste management effectiveness, followed by in-depth interviews with nurses and ward managers to explore supporting and inhibiting factors. Total sampling was used, involving all nurses across different shifts and wards. The results showed that nurses had good knowledge of waste management (79.99 ± 11.72) and ward managers’ roles (85.50 ± 14.24). Knowledge alone was not significantly associated with effectiveness, whereas nurses’ understanding of leadership roles and ward managers’ support demonstrated positive and significant relationships. Nurse compliance with procedures was not significantly related, indicating that system and resource factors had greater influence on effectiveness.
