Abstract
The global environmental crisis characterized by deforestation, climate change, and ecosystem destruction demands a new approach that is not only technical, but also ethical and spiritual. This study examines the concept of waqf forests as a productive waqf instrument that integrates Islamic values, environmental conservation, and community empowerment, within the framework of Maqashid Sharia. Using a qualitative approach and library research methods, this study explores scientific literature, regulations, and previous studies on waqf, forestry, and maqashid sharia. The results show that waqf forests have a strong relevance to the five main objectives of maqashid sharia: preserving religion (ḥifẓul dīn), life (ḥifẓul nafs), reason (ḥifẓul 'aql), descendants (ḥifẓul nasl), and property (ḥifẓul māl), as well as ecological values (ḥifẓul bī'ah) as an additional dimension in the contemporary context. This concept not only encourages forest conservation and climate crisis mitigation but also opens up opportunities for community participation in sustainable charitable giving. This research recommends the need for stronger legality, a professional waqf management model, and strengthened synergy between religious institutions, the government, and civil society to realize waqf forests as a strategic solution for Sharia-based environmental governance in Indonesia.
