Abstract
This study explores the psychological struggles of Raya, the central character in the Indonesian video game A Space for the Unbound (2021), through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. By employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research examines how the interplay between the id, ego, and superego shapes Raya’s emotional turmoil, particularly in relation to her traumatic experiences with her abusive father. The analysis draws from in-game scenes, narrative dialogue, and symbolic interactions—such as the “space dive” mechanic—to reveal how suppressed desires, internalized guilt, and emotional repression manifest in her behavior and mental health. The findings demonstrate that Raya’s unresolved trauma leads to perfectionism, isolation, and identity conflict, offering insight into how video games can serve as powerful tools for portraying psychological complexity. This study highlights the potential of interactive media to engage players in emotional narratives while fostering understanding of mental health issues.
