Abstract

Online games are not merely spaces for entertainment but also social arenas that reproduce power relations. In LifeAfter, the distribution of economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital influences players’ communication, leading to the emergence of symbolic violence. This study employs Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical perspective to understand how symbolic violence is communicated among LifeAfter players in the Indonesian server. A qualitative method was applied using Moustakas’ phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six active LifeAfter players from the Indonesian server, selected using purposive sampling. The analysis was conducted through phenomenological reduction to identify the essence of participants’ experiences related to symbolic violence. The study identifies four forms of symbolic violence: (1) symbolic violence through speech and negative labeling; (2) symbolic violence through emoticons and virtual gestures; (3) class-based symbolic violence rooted in sharp socio-economic distinctions; and (4) gender-based symbolic violence, in which female players experience both privilege and objectification. Economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital determine whether players occupy dominant or subordinate positions within the community. The findings reveal that LifeAfter reproduces capitalism, patriarchy, and social class structures through communication practices. Symbolic violence operates subtly and is accepted as normal by players with limited capital. The virtual world of LifeAfter mirrors real-world social structures, demonstrating that online games are not neutral spaces but arenas of social value reproduction.
