Abstract
The strength of concrete depends on the type and composition of its constituent materials, as well as the curing process after casting. Concrete also has weaknesses, particularly in its tensile and flexural strengths, which tend to be less than optimal. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of using steel slag as a partial replacement for fine aggregate and the addition of fiberglass on the compressive and splitting tensile strength of concrete. The research method employed is a quantitative approach through a series of laboratory tests. The study uses mix variations of steel slag at 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% of the total fine aggregate volume, with an additional 0.6% of fiberglass. Concrete cylinders measuring 15 × 30 cm were prepared for testing compressive strength and splitting tensile strength at 28 days of age. The concrete mix design refers to SNI 03-2834-2000 with a target strength of 25 MPa. The results indicate that the use of steel slag as a fine aggregate replacement and the addition of fiberglass have not been able to optimally improve the compressive or splitting tensile strength of concrete. The decrease in compressive strength is caused by increased porosity and reduced workability, resulting in less dense concrete. The mixing process of fiberglass also tends to cause fiber clumping, leading to uneven distribution. A 30% substitution of steel slag provides a slight increase in compressive strength, although not significantly, while a 45% substitution reduces the concrete’s strength due to excessive replacement. The pattern of splitting tensile strength follows that of compressive strength, approximately 10% of the compressive value, with reductions observed at higher levels of steel slag substitution. Overall, the combination of steel slag and fiberglass has not produced an optimal improvement in concrete strength.
