Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-mixing in esports news headlines on the @Revivaltvid Instagram account to analyze its forms and implementation in Indonesian language learning. The research aims to identify types of code-mixing (word, phrase, and clause insertion) and their relevance to teaching news text material for eighth-grade students (Phase D) under the Merdeka Curriculum. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data consisting of words, phrases, and sentences containing code-mixing were collected from @Revivaltvid’s January 2024 headlines using observation, note-taking, and documentation techniques, analyzed with the intralingual matching method and the comparison-differentiation technique (HBB). The findings reveal 37 instances of code-mixing, with 36 cases of outer code-mixing (Indonesian with English, Arabic, and French) and one case of inner code-mixing (Indonesian with Sundanese), reflecting the influence of globalization in the esports community’s communication. Implementation through Student Worksheets (LKPD) incorporating listening and writing elements enhances students’ understanding of linguistic structures, media literacy, and critical thinking, though challenges such as the minimal use of regional languages warrant attention. This study provides sociolinguistic insights and interactive teaching materials, encouraging further research on other platforms with innovative methods to enrich Indonesian language education.
