Abstract
The continuous development of construction increases the demand for reliable structural materials. Timber remains the main alternative in regions with limited availability of concrete and steel due to its renewable nature and local accessibility, such as keruing wood. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency level and relative stiffness between solid timber beams and nailed joint beams. The method used was laboratory experimentation. The test specimens consisted of solid keruing beams measuring 6×10×200 cm and jointed beams measuring 3×5×60 cm, connected with nails of two sizes: 5 inches (Ø 5.71 mm; L 127 mm) and 6 inches (Ø 6.68 mm; L 152 mm). The results showed that solid timber beams had an average maximum load (Pmax) of 16.53 kN with a deflection of 10.72 mm. Meanwhile, beams with 5-inch nails achieved 15.86 kN with a deflection of 33.79 mm, and those with 6-inch nails achieved 17.22 kN with a deflection of 27.51 mm. The relative stiffness values obtained were 1,542.26 N/mm for solid beams, 469.37 N/mm for 5-inch nailed joints, and 625.95 N/mm for 6-inch nailed joints. It is concluded that regardless of the joining technique, the stiffness cannot match that of solid timber beams.
