Abstract

Green Open Space (GOS) is an essential element of urban spatial planning as it functions to maintain ecological balance and improve environmental quality. Magelang City, as a small city, faces challenges in meeting the proportion of GOS as mandated by Law Number 26 of 2007, which requires at least 30% of the total city area, consisting of 20% public GOS and 10% private GOS. This study aims to: (1) analyze the availability of GOS in Magelang City in 2019 and 2024; (2) analyze the spatial distribution pattern of GOS; and (3) analyze GOS requirements based on land area and oxygen demand. This study employs quantitative, spatial, comparative, and descriptive approaches The results indicate that in 2019, the total GOS area in Magelang City was 29.73%, consisting of 11.53% public GOS and 18.15% private GOS. In 2024, the proportion of public GOS remains below the 20% threshold, while private GOS exceeds the minimum 10% in both years. Spatial analysis using the Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) method shows that the distribution of GOS in all districts is clustered. Meanwhile, the analysis of GOS needs based on land area indicates that the total GOS has not yet reached the ideal 30%, although oxygen-based requirements are met in both years. These findings suggest that although the quantitative coverage of GOS nearly reaches the target, there is an imbalance between the proportion of public and private GOS and an uneven spatial distribution. Therefore, urban spatial planning strategies should focus on equitable GOS distribution, the protection of public GOS, and the optimization of its ecological and social functions in urban areas.
