Abstract

Out-of-town students face various psychological, social, and academic challenges when they have to live far away from their families and home environment. This study aims to explore the obstacles experienced by students from Solo Raya who pursue higher education outside their hometown, as well as the coping strategies they use to adapt to life in new environments. This research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method and involved four student informants from Solo Raya studying in different cities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that out-of-town students encounter several obstacles, including culture shock (differences in language, food, social interactions, and socio-economic conditions), homesickness, financial difficulties, and academic or internship pressures. These challenges generate emotional, social, and even physical impacts that require students to develop appropriate coping strategies. The coping strategies identified are problem-focused coping (actively asking questions, managing finances, cooking, finding practical solutions), emotion-focused coping (self-acceptance, self-healing, maintaining communication with family), social coping (support from peers and social networks), and spiritual coping (prayer and religious practices). This study concludes that the type of coping strategy used depends on the specific problems faced. Practical issues such as language, food, and finances are mostly handled through problem-focused coping, while homesickness and emotional burdens are managed with emotion-focused coping, supported by social and spiritual coping. These findings highlight the adaptive and flexible coping patterns of Solo Raya students living away from home, and provide insights for higher education institutions to offer more effective support for out-of-town students.
