Abstract

Residual stresses generated during welding were known to significantly affect the performance, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability of high-strength steel structures. This study aimed to quantify and compare residual stress levels in high-strength steel welded joints under four thermal conditions: without thermal treatment (S1), with preheating (S2), with post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) (S3), and with combined preheating and PWHT (S4). Residual stresses were determined using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) sin²ψ method, in which strain values were calculated from diffraction peak shifts and converted to stresses based on Hooke’s law with an elastic modulus of 210 GPa. The results showed that preheating (S2) reduced tensile residual stresses compared with untreated joints (S1), while PWHT (S3) achieved greater reductions and, in some cases, produced compressive stresses. The combined preheating and PWHT condition (S4) resulted in the most substantial reduction, yielding the lowest tensile stress levels among all treatments. These findings indicated that appropriate thermal treatments, particularly the combined approach, were effective in mitigating detrimental tensile residual stresses and improving the structural reliability of high-strength steel welds.
