Abstract
Background: Older adults often experience physiological changes that affect their sleep quality. One effective non-pharmacological method to help improve sleep quality is through Deep Breathing Exercise. Objective: To assess the impact of Deep Breathing Exercise on improving sleep quality in the elderly. Methods: A pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. A sample of 20 elderly individuals who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was selected using purposive sampling. The Deep Breathing Exercise intervention was performed for 7 consecutive days, twice a day, with each session lasting 15 minutes. Sleep quality was measured using the PSQI tool. Results: A significant improvement in sleep quality was found after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), proving that Deep Breathing Exercise had a positive impact on the sleep quality of the elderly. Conclusion: Deep Breathing Exercise is a proven effective method for improving sleep quality in the elderly and can be implemented as a simple non-pharmacological therapy in physiotherapy
