Abstract

This study aims to describe the subjective well-being of out-of-town students from outside Java who are studying at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Subjective well-being reflects an individual's evaluation of their life, which includes positive and negative affective aspects as well as cognitive aspects. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through semi structured interviews with four informants selected using the snowball sampling technique, and the criteria for this research informants are out-of-town students from outside Java, out-of-town students who have just been out-of-town (6-12 months), and active undergraduate students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The results of the study indicate that the subjective well-being of out-of-town students is characterized by various psychological dynamics, such as feelings of happiness, stress, loneliness, closeness to the Qur'an, obsessive attitudes, a sense of prestige, independence, and perceptions of expectations. Factors that influence the emergence of these dynamics include differences in social and cultural environments, friendship relationships, social labeling, personality, academic obstacles, religious beliefs, gratitude, family dynamics, hopes and demands, and financial conditions. The impacts of these conditions can be positive, such as improved social relationships, self-reflection, and discipline, or negative, such as feelings of stress, social difficulties, or impaired focus. This research is expected to contribute to efforts to improve the psychological well-being of out-of-town students and serve as a reference for educational institutions in providing more holistic support to students from outside the region.
