Abstract
The increasing population in Karanganyar Regency, predominantly composed of the productive age group, has led to a growing demand for housing amidst limited land availability. Much of the land is either used for agriculture or located in mountainous regions, posing challenges for urban expansion. Vertical housing is seen as a strategic solution to address this issue by promoting land efficiency, comfort, and sustainability principles. This design research aims to propose a vertical housing concept that integrates environmental, social, and economic sustainability tailored to the local context of Karanganyar. The methodology includes field observations, literature studies, and interviews to gather empirical data and local perspectives. The analysis covers demographic trends, site selection in Jaten Subdistrict, and application of sustainable design elements such as green facades, rainwater harvesting, natural lighting, and communal green spaces. International case studies, including Bosco Verticale in Milan and Kampung Admiralty in Singapore, provide inspiration for efficient and contextual vertical living. The final design demonstrates that sustainable vertical housing can not only address land scarcity and housing needs but also enhance residents’ quality of life through social inclusivity and long-term economic efficiency. This concept is expected to serve as a model for future adaptive, eco-friendly, and community- empowering housing developments.
