Abstract

The shift in educational paradigms has driven the emergence of more contextual, sustainable, and inclusive learning models. Permaculture-Based Learning is one such approach that integrates principles of ecology, self-reliance, and sustainability into the foundation of primary education. Within this framework, the design of Grow School in Surakarta aims to create a learning environment that is not only child and naturefriendly but also fosters students' active engagement through direct interaction with their surrounding ecosystem. The architectural design of the school responds to the social, cultural, and climatic conditions of Surakarta by adapting permaculture principles into site planning, the use of local materials, water and energy management systems, and the creation of educational landscapes. All spatial elements are conceived as part of a living learning ecosystem where classrooms, gardens, farms, and play areas are interconnected in a dynamic and mutually supportive system. Furthermore, the concept of Universal Design is applied to ensure that every space is accessible and usable by all children, including those with special needs. This is achieved through the design of flexible, intuitive, safe, and inclusive spaces aligned with the philosophy of Grow School, which values the diversity of children's potentials and learning styles.
