Abstract

Bernadya is a young Indonesian musician known for his emotional songs, one of which is entitled "Satu Bulan". The song's video clip depicts sadness and loss in the context of a romantic relationship. The purpose of this study is to explore how Gen Z understands and interprets the elements of sadness displayed in the video. This study uses Stuart Hall's (1980) encoding-decoding theory as the basis for analysis. The research approach uses Qualitative Descriptive through data collection methods in the form of in-depth interviews and documentation. The analysis technique is carried out using data triangulation to obtain validity from various sources and time. The research findings show that Stuart Hall's theory of encoding-decoding is proven to be appropriate in the study of Gen Z's reception of the video clip of the song "Satu Bulan" by Bernadya. The majority of informants are in a hegemonic-dominant position, which means they accept and internalize the meaning of sadness conveyed. While one informant shows a negotiating position, and none are found in an oppositional position, which indicates the success of conveying the message emotionally and ideologically.
