Abstract
The elderly population in Indonesia continues to increase significantly, creating an urgent need for housing solutions that support the well-being of older adults, especially neglected seniors. The Special Region of Yogyakarta records the highest percentage of elderly residents in Indonesia, with a considerable number of neglected elderly individuals. Nursing homes (panti wreda) have become one of the solutions to address this issue; however, the design and facilities of these homes often fail to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of the elderly, ultimately hindering their development into potential seniors. This study aims to design a nursing home using a humanistic approach guided by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This humanistic approach not only considers clinical aspects but also addresses the need for safety, love and belonging, and self-actualization among the elderly. The site for the nursing home design is located in Yogyakarta, specifically in Sleman. The application of humanistic architectural concepts can help elderly individuals reach their optimal potential through an environment that supports independence, social interaction, and emotional well-being. This approach is expected to serve as a model for future nursing home designs in Indonesia.
