Abstract

Surakarta also known as Solo is a cultural city rich in diverse performing arts, earning the title of "City of Craft and Folk Arts" by UNESCO. However, the city still lacks sufficient representative performance venues that can fully accommodate the needs of its vibrant artistic community. The Solo Performing Arts Center is designed as a hub for performing arts activities and a collaborative space for communities, adapting to the dynamic nature of local culture. An expressionist architectural approach is applied to reflect the emotional character of the arts through dynamic and symbolic building forms. The center integrates various functions including a theater, gallery, rehearsal studios, community spaces, and spaces for local creative entrepreneurs, forming a community-based, and mix-use complex that supports the growth of a creative economy. This design aims not only to provide a performance venue, but also to establish a cultural living space that remains active and accessible at all times. Ultimately, the project aspires to become a new cultural icon of Surakarta, addressing the city's social, economic, and aesthetic needs while supporting the preservation and evolution of Solo’s cultural identity.
