Abstract

The city of Kudus is currently facing various urban chalslenges such as increasing population density, declining environmental quality, limited green open space, and a decreasing literacy index. On the other hand, local potentials such as rich cultural heritage and active art communities have not been supported by adequate public facilities. Only 1.88% of the total area is allocated for green open spaces, while many art groups and literacy communities lack proper spaces for expression. This condition highlights the urgent need for public spaces that serve not only as recreational areas but also as educational and creative platforms. The placemaking approach offers a relevant strategy, focusing on a collaborative process that involves the community in shaping meaningful places. Public space design based on placemaking in Kudus aims to accommodate the needs for art and literacy spaces, strengthen social interaction, preserve local culture, and improve environmental quality. Spaces designed through this approach encourage active civic engagement while also fostering strong local identity and supporting collective well-being. Therefore, public space becomes a catalyst for developing a healthier, more inclusive, and sustainable city.
