Abstract

Technological advancements offer many benefits related to the advancement of the internet and the ease of human civilization, where now almost all activities can be accessed via the internet, including entertainment. Online games are one of the most popular forms of entertainment for all people, especially teenagers and students, to reduce stress. If this activity is done excessively, it will certainly cause addiction in humans, which will have a negative impact on their lives and can shape their self concept, such as communication patterns and behavior. Even now, there are many examples of negative impacts that have arisen due to excessive online game playing, such as becoming lazy to study, using rude words, contradicting parents, and many more. The purpose of this study is to discuss how the impact of playing online games can change a person's communication behavior due to playing online games for students. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were obtained from interviews with communication science students at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta. There was found something unique about these game players, namely narcissistic behavior and communication patterns often using CMC (Computer Mediated Communication). In addition, researchers also highlight how the concepts of “I” and “Me” relate to subjective and objective points of view in playing games.
